An Exploratory Investigation of Black Mother-daughter Relationships across the Life Course
Dissertation Proposal: May 2023
Projected Dissertation Defense: September 2024
Woah there! Is it dissertation time already? I think it is!
Currently, there are large gaps in the literature surrounding the nature of Black mother-daughter relationships despite the matriarchal structure of the majority of Black American households. Research has yet to look at the role of the mother-daughter relationship in gendered racial socialization throughout the life course.
Previous research suggests that stress and trauma may be transgenerational and intergenerational- but what about healing, hoping, and coping? Traditionally, a deficit approach has been applied to studying health disparities in the Black community. We know that Black women and girls experience intersectional oppression. However, this project desires to uncover the intersectional superpowers of this demographic population by focusing on the strengths-based messaging that may act as a buffer to racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination through multi-method qualitative inquiry.
